The goal of this conference was to connect innovative research with environmental professionals, fostering the progression of knowledge and strengthening business relationships. This conference was well attended by a diverse audience, including representatives of engineering firms, environmental consulting firms, government and regulatory bodies, energy companies, students, university professors and others. Opening remarks were provided by the Honourable Bill Blaikie, Minister of Manitoba Conservation followed by a keynote address by Dr.Erin Bennett of Bioengineering Group, Salem, MA.

MEIA's annual Emerging Issues conference was a full day of presentations focused on pioneering new energy sources, introducing and defining corporate responsibility to green building; investments; and the impact of new programs such as Extended Producer Responsibility.

Dr. Norman Halden, Dean of the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba gave an overview of new and emerging environmental programs at the U of M, followed by a fascinating presentation of on-going & emerging research. He provided an overview of the considerable array of analytical equipment that is being applied to a wide array of environmental projects. This session was held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at FortWhyte Alive.

This well-attended one day seminar held on May 20, 2009 at the University of Manitoba provided hands on field instruction in soil sampling and drill rig safety. Classroom presentations included air sampling; microbiology testing; organic and inorganic testing and limnology testing. Further instruction covered relative environmental and provincial guidelines and standards, Codes or Practice, etc. The afternoon session involved a drill rig demonstration and instruction on a variety of soil and water sampling techniques and analysis.
Of particular note, this course is being offered as a 1.5 credit hour course at the University of Manitoba. The course number is ENVR 2010; titled Environmental Field Investigations.
